Jan Jenik, a 20-year-old Coyotes’ third-round draft pick in 2018 who has yet to make his NHL debut, scored a second-period goal with an assist from captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Center Christian Dvorak was credited with two goals in a three-goal second period, and last season’s No. 3 goaltender, Adin Hill, registered a shutout and played all three 15-minute periods.

Phil Kessel scored the night’s final goal with a sharp wrister from the right side.

Jenik took a stick up near his head just before his goal, then was hooked with Conor Garland’s stick in the third period.

“Jenik’s a good kid, he’s going to get reps,” head coach Rick Tocchet said. “I’ve always liked him. He’s not scared to go into those areas, he’s got a great shot, he’s a scoring junior and he’s only getting better.”

What could have been a very exciting playoff run for the Coyotes after they defeated the Nashville Predators in the qualifying playoff round this past season, was stopped short the very next round after the Avalanche took care of them in five games. A large part of what kept the Coyotes in the playoff picture was their stellar goaltender Darcy Kuemper, who is now tied with Anton Khudobin of the Dallas Stars for the second-best save percentage (.926) in the NHL over the past two seasons. After losing a huge part of their offense this offseason in Taylor Hall, the duo of Clayton Keller and Nick Shmaltz will be asked to carry a bulk of the scoring load in what is a division filled with defensive talent.

The past few seasons, the Coyotes young core featuring Jakob Chychrun, Conor Garland, and Christian Dvorak has taken some huge steps in their development. In addition, the Coyotes had the fifth best penalty kill in the NHL (82.7%) while also finishing third in the league in goals against (187). If they haven’t already been on the right track, being able to play against some of the best teams in the league like the Avalanche, Blues, and Golden Knights, on a nightly basis bodes well for the future of their careers.

The future is bright for the Arizona Coyotes coming off of their first playoff appearance since 2012. With a proven number one goaltender coupled with their great defensive stats, the Coyotes could turn out to be a thorn in the side of a lot of the top teams in this division.

Defenseman Dysin Mayo set up Dvorak’s second goal with a one-timer from the point that Dvorak re-directed into the net.

“The Tucson coaches love him. He’s a steady guy, he’s a pro,” Tocchet said of Mayo, a fifth-rounder in 2014. “‘Chappy’s’ a scrappy guy, he’s played for us in the past. Those guys, listen, they’re trying to push for jobs and I like that. It’s good for them, they should.”

“Obviously you don’t want to run your teammates over and hurt them, but at the same time, you need to get into that game mindset a little bit to bump into some guys in front of the net and get ready that way,” Ekman-Larsson said.

Tocchet liked what he saw from center Derick Brassard’s line of Tyler Pitlick, Brassard and Drake Caggiula. He said he liked Jordan Gross’ play on defense.

Goaltenders Darcy Kuemper and Antti Raanta were held out of the scrimmage. Raanta took part in his first practice of camp in the morning skate Friday.

Defenseman Alex Goligoski also was in the morning skate but didn’t play Friday night. Tocchet said he needs them to be in a safe skating situation, and other players could join camp as soon as Sunday.

The Coyotes confirmed that Roadrunners head coach Jay Varady has joined the NHL team coaching staff for this season. Varady was on the bench for Friday’s scrimmage. A new head coach for the Roadrunners, who plan to start their season in February, has yet to be announced. “He’s a good man. He’s got a good hockey I.Q., keeps things moving in our coaches room. Very good addition for us.”\
C Barrett Hayton could be back early next week, and other players need to see live action, Tocchet said. To that end, he said it’s possible another scrimmage could be held Monday.
