With the news that the NHL is set to return on January 13th, the Arizona Coyotes will need to spare a thought for which players will most likely fill out their taxi squad.

Taxi squads will be used during the 2020/21 season to allow teams to maintain strict roster bubbles, while also making the ability to call up players that would normally be in the minors far easier than usual.

Players on the taxi squad will not count against the salary cap until they are called up and all usual rules regarding the call-ups and waivers/send downs of players will remain.

Those placed on the taxi squad will train with the NHL squad, are allowed to participate in team activities, and can also travel with them throughout the season, making it easier for teams if sudden injuries occur and replacements are needed at short notice.

This will also benefit the minor league players/prospects as they will effectively receive the Barrett Hayton treatment from last season, allowing them to rub shoulders with NHL players and learn as much as they can from the NHL coaching staff throughout the 56-game season.

Teams must have a minimum of four players on the taxi squad, with a maximum number of six, so with that in mind, who are the most likely candidates for the Arizona Coyotes?

Kyle Capobianco
The former Sudbury Wolves captain has been an exceptionally reliable player in the AHL with the Tucson Roadrunners, registering more than 30 points (in each of his first three professional seasons – combining for 19 goals and 99 total points in 135 regular-season appearances.

Capobianco has flirted with the NHL roster on a few occasions, with a career-high nine appearances last season, which saw him score his first-ever NHL goal.

With the likes of Jason Demers, Alex Goligoski, Niklas Hjalmarsson, and Jordan Oesterle all impending UFAs after this season, it is generally believed that Capobianco will have an opportunity to begin staking a claim to regular NHL ice time next season.

The 23-year-old Mississauga, Ontario native could benefit from spending more time around the NHL team’s coaching staff, helping him to refine areas of his game and give him the best chance at stepping up to the majors on a full-time basis.

The opportunity to train regularly with the Coyotes, while being available for a call-up, is something that Capobianco should take full advantage of and further his development as one of the team’s future pieces along the blueline.

Adin Hill
NHL teams are required to carry three goaltenders next season, but one of them can be placed on the taxi squad, meaning that Adin Hill is most likely to have the chance at training regularly with the NHL roster.

Hayden said he’s learned the tendencies of his new teammates through watching them in practice. He and the new bunch of forwards were labeled “tenacious on the puck” and compared to “sandpaper” by defenseman Jason Demers.

“There’ s quite a few new guys here and we’re all in the same boat. All of the systems were laid out for us an we’ve had quite a few days to digest everything,” Hayden said last week. “At this point we all have a pretty solid grasp on the systems. There’s video, just different explanations on how things operate here.”

Counting down to opening night
Monday: Six new forwards have replaced six forwards from the team that finished last season in the bubble, as the Coyotes sought more physical and gritty play from that group.

Tuesday: The Coyotes have a group of defensemen that have been together for a few seasons now, and that group will be counted on again this season.

Wednesday: The strength of the Coyotes last season was goaltending, but 56 games in 114 days will test their depth in net.

Thursday: The 2020-21 season was supposed to be a grand celebration of the Coyotes’ silver anniversary in the Valley. It will now be a two-season celebration as the team focuses this year on a sprint of a 56-game schedule over 114 days.

Hill was re-signed this past off-season and clearly looks to be the team’s backup of the future, with Antti Raanta’s $4.25 million deal expiring next summer.

Having Hill around the team for the entire season, with taxi squad goaltenders needing to travel with the team to every game to ensure they are available to be called up in an emergency, can only benefit him and his chances of taking over from Raanta in the long-term.

Hill has shown plenty of potential between the pipes, holding a 10-12-3 record with a .907 save percentage and a goals-against average of 2.81 across his young professional career.

Now 24, Hill clearly believes in himself and could have opportunities throughout the shortened season to step in for either Raanta or Darcy Kuemper, should injuries creep in.

Even if the shorter campaign allows the Coyotes’ tandem to play completely healthy, Hill will still benefit from being around the major-league setup and push him towards making the jump up on a full-time basis from the 2021/22 season.

Brayden Burke, Hudson Fasching, and Michael Bunting
These three players have been some of the top performers for the Roadrunners over the past couple of seasons, particularly Burke and Bunting.

Fasching might need to battle it out with Lane Pederson, who has also been an exceptional minor leaguer in the Coyotes system, but it seems fairly likely that the three players mentioned will be brought into the taxi squad.

Their AHL quality has already been established and they are on the older spectrum, being 23, 25, and 25 respectively, so they are some of the more NHL-ready prospects the Coyotes could call upon should injuries cause problems.

Fasching and Bunting have NHL experience, though largely just a few games and none of them coming last season. With the season being cut down to just 56 games, the Coyotes will need to ensure that the players they have at their immediate disposal can step up and produce adequately.

There are a number of promising young players in the Coyotes system, but the desire to win is likely to benefit these three Roadrunners stalwarts and see them make NHL appearances throughout 2021.

Victor Söderström
While the majority of Coyotes prospects will be allowed to play in either Europe or the AHL this season, whenever it is allowed to commence, one player that is likely to be brought into the taxi squad is Victor Söderström.

Söderström is easily the Coyotes’ best prospect not already in the NHL and having him around the team for a season, especially with captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson acting as a mentor, can help his development accelerate beyond its already impressive level.

The 19-year-old is waiver exempt, meaning he would be the easiest player to call up and send down during the season, without the risk of other teams claiming him.

He came close to making the NHL roster out of camp last season and, with plenty of aging players currently in the team’s top six, there’s every chance that Söderström will be given a chance to claim NHL minutes by the end of the regular season.

The team will have six games to assess Söderström’s ability to play in the NHL at this young age, before eating a year on his entry-level contract, so while he isn’t likely to make many appearances this season, a smattering of call-ups could help the team see progress in their top prospect.

The eighth-highest player to appear on our Arizona Coyotes top 25 under 25 list was a former first-round pick that has been a regular NHL player over the past four years: Lawson Crouse.

“Feels good to be around the guys. It was nice to have a little extra time with the guys before the camp started,” Raanta said. “I feel like we got more speed with some guys (forwards) that came in, a lot of hard workers and that’s kind of our identity as a team. We don’t want to be outworked in games.”

Defenseman Jason Demers did not practice, getting what head coach Rick Tocchet called a maintenance day, and the Coyotes still await the camp debuts of center Barrett Hayton and defensemen Victor Soderstrom and Ilya Lyubushkin.

Hayton is expected to practice Monday, Soderstrom is in town but possibly a couple of days from joining the team on the ice while he completes his quarantine, and Lyubushkin is still dealing with international visa matters and has yet to leave Russia.

Tocchet said a scrimmage is planned for Monday, but one in which the action could be stopped for coaching instruction.

“It’s probably better to do a controlled scrimmage where I can script the situations, let them play, and stop it whether I have to teach or not,” Tocchet said. “(Monday’s) a teaching day with a scrimmage.”

The Coyotes worked on the power play, and switched up their lines a little with Lawson Crouse joining Nick Schmaltz and Conor Garland. Clayton Keller joined a line with Tyler Pitlick and Derick Brassard.

Goligoski paired with Jakob Chychrun on defense for some drills.

Crouse was originally selected 11th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2015 NHL Draft but was acquired by the Coyotes over a year later when then-GM John Chayka sent a second and a third-round pick in exchange for the Mt. Brydges, Ontario native along with Dave Bolland’s contract.

After being traded to the desert, Crouse went on to make 72 appearances in the NHL during his rookie season (2016/17) and registered five goals and 12 total points while largely holding down a role on the team’s bottom line – averaging 11:53 while on the ice.

Despite burning a year on his entry-level contract, Crouse spent the majority of the 2017/18 season down in the minors with the Tucson Roadrunners – where he proved to be a more than competent offensive producer in the AHL, with 15 goals and 32 total points in 56 regular-season games.

He did feature 11 times for the Coyotes (1G, 10:56 ATOI) and had an impressive nine-game run in the playoffs, where he earned two goals and eight points.

Since then, Crouse has become a staple on the Coyotes’ bottom six, with back-to-back 25-point seasons (11G-14A and 15G-10A in 81 and 66 games respectively).

But it isn’t his offensive production that has made Crouse a valuable piece to Rick Tocchet’s puzzle, but rather the way he uses his imposing 6-foot-4, 220lbs frame.

Over the past two seasons, Crouse has combined for a whopping 489 hits – making him the big, physical hitter that Tocchet hopes he will have more of with recent additions Tyler Pitlick and Johan Larsson.

Crouse also puts his body on the line in front of his own net, with 73 blocked shots in that same two-year span, and his increased role on the team, with an average of 13:35 last season, sees him play an important part on a team that managed to defeat the Nashville Predators in the qualifying round of the playoffs this past summer.

If Crouse can continue to improve his offensive production, he could be viewed as one of the best-valued bottom six players in the league, especially if he continues to score 15+ goals moving forward.

It’s Thanksgiving this week in the United States and the holiday season is right around the corner. Like the last few years, PHR will take a look at what teams are thankful for but this year comes with a bit of a change. Normally teams would have an idea of where their season was heading, coming up on the one-quarter mark with mountains of statistics to analyze. Instead, in this unprecedented year, the season hasn’t even begun. We’ll still take a look at what each group is excited about and what they could hope for once the calendar turns to 2021.

Jakob Chychrun Jersey

What are the Coyotes most thankful for?

New management.

2020 has not been good to the Coyotes. The team was docked draft picks for improper prospect testing, had their general manager leave the team right before the postseason began, and then watched Taylor Hall—who cost three prospects and two high draft picks—leave in free agency only to sign a one-year deal in Buffalo, a team that has had even less on-ice success in recent years. Then what was left of their scouting department, running the draft without input from their new GM, selected a player that was immediately in the middle of a public relations firestorm, with the team eventually renouncing his rights. The Coyotes would end up with just four players from the 2020 draft, none selected higher than 142nd.

It was just blow after blow to an organization that seemed to be headed in the right direction after securing new, stable ownership last year.

Now, thankful for Bill Armstrong finally taking the reins of the front office, the Coyotes have a long way back. Armstrong has already made an important move, even if it did fly somewhat under the radar in NHL circles. The Coyotes secured the employment of Darryl Plandowski, who had served as assistant director of amateur scouting in Tampa Bay. Plandowski is very well-respected across the industry as a leading scouting mind and hopefully will be able to turn around a department that had caused catastrophic penalties for the organization, not to mention the fact that out of the last four Coyotes drafts (not including 2020), only Jakob Chychrun, Clayton Keller, and Barrett Hayton have actually made it to the NHL. Armstrong and Plandowski have a ton of work to do.

Who are the Coyotes most thankful for?

“It’s huge. He’s been our best player,” Tocchet said. “The last year, he’s been our best player. So having him out for two, three months, it’s been tough when your best player’s out.

“But saying that, it’s just not all on Kuemps. We’re getting good goaltending. So that’s not the issue. Especially the last four or five games, ‘Raants’ has come in there and played some good games. Actually, Hilly played really good in Dallas and Toronto. So for me, it’s other areas that we’ve got to improve on, but the goaltending’s been really good for us.”

Jakob Chychrun (lower-body) has missed the previous two games, and Tocchet said Monday his return wouldn’t be “for the next few games,” and after that, a timeline isn’t clear.

“He’s probably a little bit of a week-to-week right now,” GM John Chayka said. “But it’s tough with an athlete like Jakob. When he gets injured, it’s not a typical recovery. He’s not dealing with something serious, but it’s something that he’s got to get through and with the skating motion to make sure it’s 100%. To try to put a timeline on it would be difficult, so he’s not going to be ready for tomorrow, but he’s also not out for the season or anything like that.”

Chychrun has previously done well in recovering quickly from injury, to which Chayka alluded.

Some good news for the blueline is that defenseman Jason Demers appears close to returning from injury, perhaps this week.

Jakob Chychrun.

It seems clear now that Keller isn’t going to become the franchise-leading, game-changing offensive presence that the Coyotes hoped they were going to get when they selected him seventh overall in 2016. It’s not that Keller is a bad player, far from it. But since scoring 65 points in his rookie year and finishing third in Calder voting, he hasn’t taken any real developmental steps—even seeing his scoring totals go down in each following season. Keller is only just beginning an eight-year extension signed last September, which will carry a $7.15MM cap hit through the 2027-28 season. Even if he does get back on track and improve his offensive totals, that deal doesn’t leave a lot of chance for excess value.

But all is not lost. The Coyotes had another first-round pick in 2016, this time 16th overall. That’s where they selected Chychrun, who, despite dealing with injury, has developed into a legitimate force on the blueline. Now four years into his NHL career, Chychrun looks like he will be a horse for the Coyotes as an all-situations defender that can log huge minutes. He averaged more than 22 minutes a night in 2019-20, reaching a new career-high in goals with 12 and points with 26 despite playing in just 63 games. Unlike Keller, Chychrun’s long-term deal, this time signed in 2018, looks like a steal for the Coyotes moving forward. Not only does he carry just a $4.6MM cap hit through 2024-25, but the deal is also heavily back-loaded, meaning Chychrun will only actually earn $3.3MM in salary this season. With the financial environment so uncertain, value like that is hard to come by in the NHL.

Youth Jakob Chychrun Jersey

What would the Coyotes be even more thankful for?

A seller’s market at the trade deadline.

The Coyotes made the postseason this year and have their sights set on it again, but it’s plain to see that this iteration of the team will have a hard time actually contending for a Stanley Cup. However, they may be able to build a new wing for their prospect cupboard if they decide to sell off some assets at the deadline. Derek Stepan, Alex Goligoski, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Jason Demers, Jordan Oesterle, Ilya Lyubushkin, and Antti Raanta are all pending unrestricted free agents, and though many of them have big cap hits, the actual salary owed by deadline time will be relatively low. If Armstrong plays his cards right, he could potentially add a massive wave of draft picks and prospects to the organization, provided there is a market for this group of veterans (and he’s willing to sell).
