The eighth-highest player to appear on our Arizona Coyotes top 25 under 25 list was a former first-round pick that has been a regular NHL player over the past four years: Lawson Crouse.

“Feels good to be around the guys. It was nice to have a little extra time with the guys before the camp started,” Raanta said. “I feel like we got more speed with some guys (forwards) that came in, a lot of hard workers and that’s kind of our identity as a team. We don’t want to be outworked in games.”

Defenseman Jason Demers did not practice, getting what head coach Rick Tocchet called a maintenance day, and the Coyotes still await the camp debuts of center Barrett Hayton and defensemen Victor Soderstrom and Ilya Lyubushkin.

Hayton is expected to practice Monday, Soderstrom is in town but possibly a couple of days from joining the team on the ice while he completes his quarantine, and Lyubushkin is still dealing with international visa matters and has yet to leave Russia.

Tocchet said a scrimmage is planned for Monday, but one in which the action could be stopped for coaching instruction.

“It’s probably better to do a controlled scrimmage where I can script the situations, let them play, and stop it whether I have to teach or not,” Tocchet said. “(Monday’s) a teaching day with a scrimmage.”

The Coyotes worked on the power play, and switched up their lines a little with Lawson Crouse joining Nick Schmaltz and Conor Garland. Clayton Keller joined a line with Tyler Pitlick and Derick Brassard.

Goligoski paired with Jakob Chychrun on defense for some drills.

Crouse was originally selected 11th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2015 NHL Draft but was acquired by the Coyotes over a year later when then-GM John Chayka sent a second and a third-round pick in exchange for the Mt. Brydges, Ontario native along with Dave Bolland’s contract.

After being traded to the desert, Crouse went on to make 72 appearances in the NHL during his rookie season (2016/17) and registered five goals and 12 total points while largely holding down a role on the team’s bottom line – averaging 11:53 while on the ice.

Despite burning a year on his entry-level contract, Crouse spent the majority of the 2017/18 season down in the minors with the Tucson Roadrunners – where he proved to be a more than competent offensive producer in the AHL, with 15 goals and 32 total points in 56 regular-season games.

He did feature 11 times for the Coyotes (1G, 10:56 ATOI) and had an impressive nine-game run in the playoffs, where he earned two goals and eight points.

Since then, Crouse has become a staple on the Coyotes’ bottom six, with back-to-back 25-point seasons (11G-14A and 15G-10A in 81 and 66 games respectively).

But it isn’t his offensive production that has made Crouse a valuable piece to Rick Tocchet’s puzzle, but rather the way he uses his imposing 6-foot-4, 220lbs frame.

Over the past two seasons, Crouse has combined for a whopping 489 hits – making him the big, physical hitter that Tocchet hopes he will have more of with recent additions Tyler Pitlick and Johan Larsson.

Crouse also puts his body on the line in front of his own net, with 73 blocked shots in that same two-year span, and his increased role on the team, with an average of 13:35 last season, sees him play an important part on a team that managed to defeat the Nashville Predators in the qualifying round of the playoffs this past summer.

If Crouse can continue to improve his offensive production, he could be viewed as one of the best-valued bottom six players in the league, especially if he continues to score 15+ goals moving forward.

In his final season in the WHL, undrafted forward Brayden Burke scored 31 goals and had 82 assists. It isn’t uncommon to see these final seasons, even from undrafted players. Since then Burke has only improved as a player.

The Arizona Coyotes signed Brayden Burke as a free agent and his first games as a professional were with the Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL playoffs. He played in two playoff games and was held pointless.

Burke did improve in his first real season in the AHL. In 67 games he had 13 goals and 20 assists, and he finished sixth on the team in points.

Breaking the trend of a sophomore slump, Burke had a great second season with the Roadrunners. Burke was close to doubling the career-highs in goals, assists, and points he set in his first season.

This past season Burke led the Roadrunners in goals and total points, set a Roadrunners’ franchise record for 13 power play goals, and was named to the AHL All-Star Classic. And while he didn’t play with the Coyotes to the Edmonton Bubble for the post-season, he was available and could have seen NHL action.

After a breakout season in the AHL and appearing poised to make the team’s lineup, Burke seems poised to make the NHL. Whether that is out of training camp or during a call-up, you can expect to see Burke in a Coyotes jersey, either during the upcoming season or the next at the latest.

Burke is a very interesting player for the Coyotes. For a team that has struggled to draft and develop, it is fitting that one of their better prospects is a player that they didn’t draft.

Burke is in the final year of his three-year, entry-level contract with the team. The upcoming season is going to influence the specifics of that deal, but it seems clear that Burke has earned a raise.

Where Burke goes from here remains to be seen. His success in the AHL doesn’t guarantee he will be successful in the NHL, but that seems likely at this point. The team has struggled to generate offense, and while Burke isn’t an immediate fix for that he may be part of the solution. With the upcoming seasons on hold Burke isn’t currently playing in another league, but if there are further delays it will be interesting to see if that changes.

Brayden Burke has gone from an undrafted player from Edmonton, Alberta to one of the Coyotes’ more intriguing prospects. His success in the NHL is far from a guarantee, but he seems to have earned a chance in the NHL. What he does with that chance remains to be seen, but Coyotes fans should be excited to find out.

Update: Initially the league was listed as the Tucson Roadrunners rather than the AHL.

The Arizona Coyotes have not been great at drafting and developing talent. Even a cursory look at the Coyotes’ draft history shows that there are a lot of misses in the early rounds, much less the later rounds. As the Tampa Bay Lightning showed, to be successful you not only need your first-round picks to work out, you need to get players in later rounds like the seventh-round selection Ondřej Palát.

Arizona has been getting better at drafting and development. Conor Garland going for fifth-round selection to the team’s leading goal scorer is probably the best indicator of this, but Jan Jeník (3rd round), Matias Maccelli (4th round), and Ivan Prosvetov (4th round) are also progressing well.

Although they didn’t draft him, the progress of forward Brayden Burke also indicates that the Coyotes are doing better at developing their players.

Brayden Burke signed his three-year, entry-level contract with the Coyotes as an undrafted free agent on March 1, 2018. He played in the WHL with the Red Deer Rebels, Lethbridge Hurricanes, and Moose Jaw Warriors, and twice scored over 100 points in a season.

Since signing with the Desert Dogs, Burke has played with the Tucson Roadrunners. His first season was spent adjusting to the professional game, and he finished with a respectable 13 goals and 20 assists in 67 games.

This past season was a breakout season for the Edmonton, Alberta native. Shaking off the dreaded sophomore slump, Burke led the Roadrunners with 21 goals and 52 points in 51 games. He earned a brief call up to the Coyotes, although he didn’t see any action, and was named to the AHL All-Star Classic. He also went with the Coyotes to the Edmonton Bubble for the post-season, although he again didn’t get any action.

In two short seasons, Burke has gone from an undrafted WHL player to a player who seems poised to be given a shot in the NHL. Burke deserves a lot of credit for his growth as a player, along with Roadrunners’ Head coach Jay Varady and General Manager Steve Sullivan.

Burke is in the final year of his three-year, entry-level contract. He has played well enough in the AHL that the team should not hesitate to re-sign him and give him a raise, even if they think he still needs more time in Tucson. But if he doesn’t get the call up he is a player to watch.
